How to Keep Your Skin Hydrated in the Fall

Autumn is an amazing month filled with warm drinks, pumpkins and scary horror movies, but also it’s the start of dry, dehydrated skin. As autumn continuously gets colder and colder, your skin will need a little extra help in order to stay soft, smooth and plump. Of course, this post is targeting those of us who live in a seasonally colder climate, so these tips may not apply to your type of autumn at home!

So here’s a blog post that’s a little more in-depth than just saying to apply a moisturizer this fall! Because, well, we already know that much, right?

Swap Your Moisturizer

If you have combination skin, or if your skin changes based on the seasons, then you may want to have a summer and winter moisturizer. A summer moisturizer will be light weight, and blends into the skin effortlessly. It will provide a decent moisture, but not enough to make your skin feel greasy.

As for fall and winter, you should have a thicker, more occlusive moisturizer. They take a little longer to blend into the skin, but provides a thick moisture barrier so the hydrating ingredients stay locked into your skin. I recommend products like First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream for those with extra dry skin. If you only get slightly drier skin, try swapping a light gel moisturizer for a lotion.

Look for Hydrating Ingredients

Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, and squalane.

Hyaluronic acid forms a natural barrier on the skin, which keeps the moisturize in. Normally, our skins lose a lot of moisture throughout the day due to the cold, chilly wind, and other everyday occurrences. An ingredient like hyaluronic acid is especially great in the winter. You can try it in a moisturizer- just make sure the ingredient is towards the top- or even a dedicated serum. Another nice bonus is that it plumps the skin, making it feel softer and bouncier.

Ceramides work on repairing the skin’s natural barrier, which again keeps moisture in and prevents it from drying up your skin through out the day. There’s also more advanced ceramides you can find in prescription skincare, or still really decent drugstore versions, so there’s a lot of options.

Glycerin is a good, if not a little basic ingredient. The majority of moisturizers have it, as it’s a cheaper ingredient but works really well on the skin to add hydration. Glycerin is also a humectant, meaning that it draws water to itself and keeps it there. You might want to rely on some other hydrating ingredients as well, but don’t knock it because it does work really well!

Squalane is the final ingredient I’m going to mention to keep your skin hydrated in the fall and winter time. It’s another great ingredient that helps lock in moisture.

Moisturize After Being Outside

If you are outside for long periods of time, consider moisturizing once you go back indoors. Your moisturizer can only work so much, and if you expose your skin to the cold for hours at a time, you may have to rehydrate again.

You might want to consider hydrating twice a day even if you normally moisturize only once. Or, try a hydrating serum or mask as a treat for your dull, dry skin.

Add A Hydrating Serum Or Mask

Besides a good moisturizer, you can add a new serum to your routine. Serums that have hydrating, intense hydration, and hyaluronic acid in their names are the best for this time of year. Even if you have oily skin, look for a light-weight serum for dry skin to keep your skin hydrated in the fall.

A face mask is a great option for those who need a heavy dose of hydration, but don’t want to risk having oily, greasy skin. Plus, you can use it as a night time treatment, and wash it off in the morning if needed. That way you get the hydration you need overnight. Whether you use a cream mask that you blend into your skin or a face mask you leave on for a couple minutes before taking off, you’ll skin will be extra hydrated.

Cover Up and Stay Warm

Avoid exposing your face to the elements and try and stay inside where it’s warm when possible, especially in the latter half of fall. Hats are a nice way to stay warm and might cover your ears, but your face is still mostly exposed. In addition, even if it’s not very cold, the wind can do a hefty amount of damage on it’s own.

Of course, going outside in the colder months can’t be avoided, but it’s a good thing to keep in mind if you out for a long time and wonder why your skin is dry. See my points above if your skin is feeling extra dry from the cold.
